Pedalling along our roads

Farm houses, castles and hermitages
length km 116.7 – height difference m 733 – easy route
Planimetry Chart Altimetry profile

This is an easy route that climbs up apparently flat ground along the arceviese road with just one demanding point at Arcevia, a very even 5-6% slope a couple of km long and just a few more slopes. The last part is very smooth and follows the Cesano river bed. This route can be extended by taking two very interesting detours.

1st detour: Eremo di Fonte Avellana: Having reached Sassoferrato, two km after the Monterosso station, turn left towards Serra S.Abbondio. On the chart this point is called “1st bv. Serra S.Abbondio”. Having reached this village, turn right towards the Hermitage.
The road is very well tarmacked and the steep climb is all in the last 3 km where you will face a 10% gradient. After the interesting tour round the Hermitage go back to Serra S.Abbondio and continue straight on towards Pergola. Here you will join the route again at a point marked “2nd bv. Serra S.Abbondio” on the chart.
This detour involves an extra 21.3 km and a height difference of about 250 m.
2nd detour: Rocca di Mondavio.

Along the way back if you still have enough time and energy you can add on this detour with an average climb. You will be rewarded by a wonderful visit to a small typical village and its Medieval Castle.
Turn off the route at the point marked “1st bv. Mondavio” on the chart and when you get to Mondavio, turn right towards S.Michele. A lovely descent will take you back to the route at the point marked “S.Michele – 2nd bv. Mondavio”.
This detour adds on 11 km and a height difference of about 180 m.
Including the two detours mentioned above the route is 149 km long with a 1,163 m height difference. Average difficulty.
