This route requires a good level of fitness and a whole day if you wish to visit the famous and splendid Frasassi Caves. There are three climbs, the most challenging is the Castelletta. At the peak there is an area equipped for picnics with a superb view of the Rossa Gorge.

It is worth the effort. The climb is long and very even along the first part. There aren’t any impossible slopes and after a rather challenging part there is a short section where the road levels out somewhat.
When you reach the town of Castelletta you have to turn right and climb some more.

After the mountain pass, the Frasassi Gorge comes into view but you should know that getting to them is not a down hill ride.

Once you have left the mountain road you turn right and face a climb to get to Valtreara. A regular climb with a gradient of up to 13% which may wipe the smile off your face. It is because of this very slope that we advise you to have a 39x26 or even better a treble. Then suddenly you are on the Frasassi road so enjoy the Caves.
On the way back you have to climb up to Arcevia which is worth a visit. However, if your energy is low you can avoid the most challenging section by taking the ring road.

The end is smooth and fast along the Arcevia road. There is heavy traffic on this road so you must keep in single file but finishing smoothly and easily is certainly an excellent way to get into shape for cycling the next day.
